A recent study published in Human Resource Management (HRM) presents a theoretical framework that helps explain how employees striving to fulfil their goals shape the effects of HR bundles on employee performance. Based on survey data collected from 362 employees in 84 service units, the study develops a new typology of HR practices based on the theory of purposeful work behaviour - communion-enhancing, status-enhancing, and achievement-enhancing HR bundles, which are commensurate to employees' motivational goal strivings. The study thus provides a novel way to combine HR practices that align more closely with employees' motivational needs, which expands the commonly used ability-motivation-opportunity (AMO) framework and contributes to the strategic HRM and employee motivation literatures. The study also provides implications for practice by explaining how a broad range of individuals can be best motivated through relevant bundles of HR practices.
