  • 1.  Foundational HRM readings

    Hello colleagues,

I'm looking for ideas on what readings should be included in a first-year doctoral seminar course that would be considered foundational to understanding the theories that underpin HRM (historical and/or modern). If you have any suggestions, please share and I will post the results to all.

I hope you are keeping safe and well!
    Thanks in advance,
    Elaine

    Hello Elaine,

I am biased because I research in the area but I'd suggest that theories around toxic and psychopathic leadership such as corporate psychopathy theory are foundational because:

    1. HR people are among the most likely to come across and have to deal with the after-effects of psychopathic leadership because of the ptsd that bullied and abused employees exhibit.
    2. Leaders with psychopathic traits are associated with low corporate social responsibility, a willingness to illegally dump toxic waste matter and thus with low organisational and societal sustainability and this is a topic of great interest to the upcoming generation of researchers.
    3. Good communications within organizations are consistently associated with effective leadership, while psychopathic leadership is only associated with upward communications and impression management. Those below psychopathic supervisors suffer from confusion about what to do and how to do it, resulting from a lack of direction, lack of training and lack of clear and regular communications.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours sincerely,

    Clive Boddy.
