    Congratulations to Our 2020 Conference & Scholarly Award Winners

    We are pleased to announce the following winners of the Human Resource Division's Conference & Scholarly Awards.

    We would normally have the chance to celebrate these wonderful scholars in person, but unfortunately we can't get together in-person this year. However, please join us in virtually congratulating the following individuals for their accomplishments!

    Best Convention Paper Award


    The Best Convention Paper Award is given to the author(s) of the best paper accepted by the Program Committee for the annual conference. This award is sponsored by the Center for Advanced Human Resource Studies at Cornell University, School of Industrial and Labor Relations.

    This year, the award winners are Zhengtang Zhang (Nanjing University Business School), Wei He (Nanjing University Business School), and Zhijie Xing (Nanjing University Business School) for their paper: Horizontal Pay Dispersion and Collective Performance: The Neglected Role of Between-Group Pay Dispersion in Shaping Employee Justice Perceptions and Organizational Sorting.

    Best Student Convention Paper Award


    The Best Student Convention Paper Award is given to the student who is the sole or first author on the best paper accepted by the Program Committee for the annual conference. This award is sponsored by University of Iowa, Tippie College of Business.

    This year, the award winners are Hanbo Shim (Rutgers University) and Xueqing Fan (Rutgers University) for their paper: More Than Just a Market: How Changes In Pay Policy Affect Organizations’ Operational and Financial Performance. Co-authors of this paper include Michael C. Sturman (Rutgers University) and Mark P. Brown (Bradley University).

    Best Convention Paper for HR-Entrepreneurship Research Award


    The Best Convention Paper Award is given to the author(s) of the best paper exploring entrepreneurial activity and entrepreneurs themselves from an HR perspective, as well as HR systems and practices through an entrepreneurship lens, at the individual or organizational level accepted by the Program Committee for the annual conference. This award is sponsored by the Kauffman Foundation.

    This year, the award winners are Ying Lu (Macquarie University), Yun Han (Xiamen University), Yue Wang (Macquarie University), and Yanzhao Tang (Xiamen University) for their paper: Understanding the Impact of Family-to-Work Conflict/Enrichment on Entrepreneurial Firms’ Performance: A Conservation of Resources Perspective.

    Best Student Convention Paper for HR-Entrepreneurship Research Award


    The Best Student Convention Paper Award is given to the student who is the sole or first author on the best paper exploring entrepreneurial activity and entrepreneurs themselves from an HR perspective, as well as HR systems and practices through an entrepreneurship lens, at the individual or organizational level accepted by the Program Committee for the annual conference. This award is sponsored by the Kauffman Foundation.

    This year, the award winner is Joonyoung Kim (Cornell University) for the paper: The Intersection between HR and Entrepreneurial Performance: Review and Roadmap for Future Research.

    Innovative Teaching Award


    The Innovative Teaching Award recognizes colleagues in the HR Division who have demonstrated innovation in the classroom or leadership in disseminating their innovations in the teaching of HRM. The innovative teaching award is based on the innovative development and dissemination of new teaching methods and new course designs. Special attention is given to methods that are developed as a result of interactions with the business community and those methods and designs that are widely disseminated. This award is sponsored by Pennsylvania State University, Great Valley School of Graduate Professional Studies.

    This year, the award winner is Brian Harney (Dublin City University) for his innovative teaching method: Strategy-HRM Linkages: Enhancing Understanding Through Practical Engagement with Small Firms.

    Scholarly Achievement Award


    The Scholarly Achievement Award is presented to the author(s) of the most significant article in HRM published in recognized journals and research annuals that are generally available to HR Division members. Publications may be empirically or non-empirically-based. Nominated papers must have a publication date of 2019. Award recipients need not belong to the Academy of Management or to the HR Division. This award is sponsored by Riegel & Emory Human Resource Center, Darla Moore School of Business, University of South Carolina.

    This year, the award winners are Lisa M. Leslie (New York University), Eden B. King (Rice University), and Judith A. Clair (Boston College) for their paper: Work-Life Ideologies: The Contextual Basis and Consequences of Beliefs about Work and Life published in Academy of Management Review, 44, 72-98.

    International HRM Scholarly Research Award


    The International HRM Scholarly Research Award is presented to the author(s) of the most significant article in international HRM. Research excellence in international human resource management is unique because of its intersection among multiple fields of management. Publications may be empirically or non-empirically-based. Nominated papers must have a publication date of 2019. Award recipients need not belong to the Academy of Management or to the HR Division. This award is sponsored by Pennsylvania State University, School of Labor and Employment Relations, Center for International Human Resource Studies.

    This year, the award winners are Maria del Carmen Triana (University of Wisconsin-Madison), Mevan Jaysinghe (Michigan State University), Jenna R. Pieper (University of Nebraska-Lincoln), Dora Maria Delgado (Northside Independent School District) and Mingxiang Li (Florida Atlantic University) for their paper: Perceived Workplace Gender Discrimination and Employee Consequences: A Meta-analysis and Complementary Studies Considering Country Context, published in Journal of Management, 45, 2419-2447.

    Emerging Scholar Awards in Employee Participation and Ownership


    The Beyster Foundation for Enterprise Development presents awards of $1,500 each for promising research by emerging scholars in the domain of broad-based employee participation and ownership. The purpose of the award program is to identify innovative research in management or management-related disciplines that considers high-impact ideas in the context of business and society's needs for employee empowerment, participative workforces, and wealth creation through broad-based equity and profit-sharing mechanisms. Research that has broad implications for practice and/or policy, and that addresses pressing economic and/or social problems, are especially appropriate for this award.

    This year, the award winner is Saehee Kang (Marquette University).

    Ralph Alexander Dissertation Award


    The Ralph Alexander Dissertation Award is given to the author of the best doctoral dissertation in the field of human resource management. This award is sponsored by Human Resource Management Journal – Wiley.

    This year, the award winner is Christine L. Nittrouer (University of Houston-Downtown) for her dissertation: Allies as Intermediaries: Strategies that Promote Hiring People with Intellectual Disabilities.

    David P. Lepak Service Award


    The David P. Lepak Service Award recognizes one or more HR Division members for exceptional service to the Division. This award is named in honor of David Lepak, whose service to the HR Division was unparalleled. The winner is nominated and selected by the HR Division Executive Committee.

    This year, the award winners are Lauren S. Simon (University of Arkansas) and Joel Koopman (Texas A&M University).
