Topic/Title: Hear #Metoo: Assessing the role of newsrooms as organizations and fourth estate in sexual harassment.

    Presenter/Facilitator: Pallavi Guha, Ph.D. (Towson U.)

    Session Type: Caucus

Description: The session will examine the role media platforms play in the anti-rape and sexual harassment media framework in the post #metoo timeframe in India. The presentation will be based on my recently published book, which includes 75 interviews with rural and subaltern feminist activists and journalists working in India's urban and rural regions. The presentation will evaluate the framework of agenda building on sexual harassment and violence through media coverage and social media outrage in the digitally emerging countries of the Global South, investigating why hashtags may or may not be successful in digitally emerging countries. During the session, attendees will work on two case studies from the book, comparing the role of Indian newsrooms as organizations dealing with sexual harassment and the fourth estate reporting on sexual harassment during the #MetooIndia.
