For those interested in bridging the divide between research and practice please come to the special symposium discussing the importance of and strategies for finding greater connection between what we research/teach and what matters to the practice of HR. The session is Monday, August 8th from 9:45-11:15 in the Hyatt Regency 602 Nooksack Room, and will feature three Ph.d.'s who have all followed different career paths, all of which displayed deep links between academe and practice.

Dave Ulrich received his Ph.d and has had an extremely successful career in executive education (at the U of Michigan) and consulting (founding the RBL Group). He has conducted the global Human Resource Competency Study (HRCS) every 5 years since 1987 and written numerous books, many based on the HRCS data. He is recognized as the most prominent thought leader in HR and has received every possible career award for his impact on the practice of HR.

Marcia Avedon pursued a career in the practice of HR after receiving her Ph.d. She has been a leading HR practitioner working for a number of companies over the course of her career, including serving as the Chief Human Resource Officer (CHRO) at Merck, Ingersoll-Rand, and Trane Technologies. She now serves as the Executive Director of the Center for Executive Succession in the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina as well as being on the Board of Directors at Generac and Acuity Brands.

Patrick Wright has remained in academe since receiving his Ph.d, publishing a number of articles in academic journals and serving as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Management. He has helped to link practitioners to academe through serving as the Director of the Center for Advanced Human Resource Studies at Cornell University and founding the Center for Executive Succession at the University of South Carolina.
