A study published recently in Human Resource Management proposed a new, SMART work design model, which integrates and expands work design research from diverse theoretical perspectives by showing how particular work characteristics combine together into higher-order categories (Stimulating, Mastery, Autonomy, Relational, and Tolerable). The model's multidimensional structure also provides nuance, allowing for not just broad but also specific subdimensions. The model is supported by empirical evidence and provides a very comprehensive perspective on work design that aims to guide both academics and practitioners when choosing work characteristics to focus on in conducting a particular study or designing better quality work.
