THE HUMAN RESOURCES DIVISION

MESSAGE FROM THE DIVISION CHAIR

David Collings

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the online community of the Human Resources (HR) Division. As one of the Academy of Management's largest divisions, we serve as the gathering place for researchers, teachers, and practitioners dedicated to discovering and disseminating state-of-the-art knowledge about human resource management. We are passionate about the work of our members and the important contribution it makes to the societies, organisations and workers around the globe. This value has been reinforced by current COVID-19 pandemic as human resources has truly come of age. Your scholarship, teaching and practice is influencing the future world of work and the experience of workers around the globe. We hope that the HR Division continues to be a key forum for the development and dissemination of these innovations.

A key aim of our Division is to create opportunities for networking and for making new connections for our members. To learn more about us, check out the features of our microsite here, including our events calendar and our discussion board where you can chat with your colleagues from around the globe. You can also follow us on Twitter and on LinkedIn. We are also extremely proud of our Ambassadors Program which is a key way through which we engage with those of you based outside of North America. Please reach out to your local Ambassador if you have any questions about the Division or ideas about how we can contribute to the development of HR scholarship in your country.

We are of course constantly working on new ways to add value for you and you can expect some new initiatives over the coming year. We truly hope that we will be back together in person at Academy of Management 2022 in Seattle. So please do consider submitting your research to our Division when the submissions system opens in late 2021.

2022 will also see our fourth HR International Conference (HRIC) which will be hosted by North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus in South Africa. We are so grateful to Professor Bennie Linde and his team for all their efforts in making the conference happen, despite the challenges of the pandemic. The conference is being organized on a hybrid basis so whether you plan to travel to South Africa or engage virtually, this will be a fantastic opportunity to build your network and develop your ideas.

This year is a particularly special one for the Division as we celebrate our 50th birthday. We have a great schedule of events planned over the course of the year as we reflect on and celebrate how the Division and our field has evolved over the past five decades. Our celebrations will conclude with an amazing reception and cruise in Seattle on August 8th 2022. Keep an eye out for further details.

I really wish to encourage you to get involved with our Division. Let’s continue to work together to enhance our understanding of how organizations can perform more effectively and how employees can have more productive and satisfying work lives through smarter people management practices. We really are at a critical point in the evolution of HR! Let’s lead that discussion.

We are always looking for you, our members, to get more involved in what we do. Please feel free to reach out to me, or any of my Executive Committee colleagues if you have any suggestions for how we can improve what our Division. Please also consider volunteering with the Division and encourage your friends and colleagues to join the Division.

We look forward to hearing from you!

David Collings, Division Chair
