    Dear HR Colleagues,

Line managers play a crucial role in the implementation of HRM practices as they help shape employee attitudes, behaviors, and, ultimately performance (Trullen, Stirpe, Bonache, & Valverde, 2016). Despite this recognition of their impact, existing literature lacks a comprehensive understanding of the HRM implementation process, particularly the challenges, paradoxes, and strategies faced by line managers to effectively implement HRM practices throughout the implementation process (Kehoe & Han, 2020; Kurdi-Nakra et al., 2022).

We are organizing professional development workshop (PDW) that is designed to emphasize the critical yet under-addressed role of line managers in HRM implementation in the strategic human resource management (HRM) literature. The PDW convenes scholars to highlight the multifaceted dimensions and factors for effective HRM implementation, emphasizing the role of organizational climate, value-fit, and paradoxes often disregarded in scholarly discourse. Finally, it will bring attention to the overlooked contributions of line managers in day-to-day HRM activities, the challenges encountered by them, and discuss strategies for empowering them for effective HRM implementation.

Day and Date: Saturday, August 10, 2024

    Time: 10:00 – 12:00 CT (GMT-5/UTC-5)

Location: Swissotel: St Gallen 3, Chicago, USA

    PDW Program:

Introduction (10 minutes): The PDW organizers - Anna Bos-Nehles and Aneeqa Suhail - will briefly elaborate on the line managers' role in HRM implementation and outline the objectives and deliverables expected from this PDW.

The PDW will consist of the following three phases:

Phase 1 Plenary Presentations (40 minutes): Four presenters will highlight the most recent research findings and present a basis for further discussion: Jongwook Pak (University of Auckland) will present about variability in HRM implementation considering the organizational climate and value-fit; Na Fu (Trinity College Dublin) will challenge the topic of HRM implementation by discussing the paradoxes in the process of implementing HRM practices; Carol Kulik (University of South Australia) will devote her attention to the role of line managers in HRM implementation; and Jordi Trullen (Universitat Ramon Llull, ESADE) will present what is needed for line managers to implement HRM practices effectively throughout the HRM implementation process.

Phase 2 Table Talk Sessions with Experts (40 minutes): Our panel of experts will lead the discussion in sub-groups based on their topic, i.e.,

    • Theme 1: Effective HRM Implementation Process (20 minutes) - Jongwook Pak (University of Auckland) and Na Fu (Trinity College Dublin)
    • Theme 2: Line Manager's Role in HRM Implementation (20 minutes) - Carole Kulik (University of South Australia) and Jordi Trullen (Universitat Ramon Llull, ESADE)

Audiences can freely choose to go to any expert to discuss their area of research. The interactive discussion will be related to the role of line managers in HRM implementation.

Phase 3 Reflection, Dissemination, and Research Strategies (20 minutes): Kaifeng Jiang (Ohio State University) will start the discussion by first reflecting on the role of line managers in the dynamics of effective HRM implementation and will invite the audience to do the same. He will conclude the session, summarize the lessons learned, and discuss potential avenues for new theoretical and empirical research.

NOTE: Join us for an engaging and informative PDW. Since we have a maximum capacity of 25 spots only, please be on time to make sure to participate in the workshop. We are looking forward to meeting you there.

    Hello Anna and Aneeqa,

I am very interested in attending your PDW on Empowering Line Managers in the Dynamic Process of HRM Implementation.

I am an early career researcher and in the throes of measuring the impact of my Individual Foresight model, which was the outcome of my PhD "Exploring the lived experience of Individual Foresight in organisations". The implications for strategic HRM practices around developing supervisors and a culture that fosters foresightfulness is one of the key areas of interest of my research.

Can we register for your workshop please? Or is it just a case of being lucky on the day .

Many thanks for your time and response – this workshop looks fabulous!

    Warm regards,

    Melissa
