Join our Panel Symposium: Building Meaningful and Impactful Academic Careers outside R1 PWIs

Is there academic life outside R1's? What happens if I get a job at a school that isn't like the R1 and/or primarily white institution (PWI) I got my PhD from? How do I find purpose and create impact through my research, teaching, and service outside an R1 PWI?

Discover the answers to these and other important questions at our interactive symposium "Building Meaningful and Impactful Academic Careers at Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs)" (#11999) at the 2026 Academy of Management Annual Meeting in Philadelphia on Sunday, August 2, 2026, from 4:45 PM to 6:15 PM at the Philadelphia Convention Center in Room #106B.

Our symposium brings together a dynamic panel of five management scholars from diverse institutions representing varied research interests and expertise (i.e., OB, HRM, ENT, STR), career backgrounds (i.e., industry, armed forces, academic administration), and at different career stages (i.e., Assistant, Associate, Professor). Going beyond the narrow focus on publishing "A's" as the primary purpose of academia, and drawing on their own lived experiences, our panelists will discuss issues related to conducting high-quality research in resource-constrained environments, teaching and pedagogical approaches that help faculty connect with the educational needs and considerations of MSI students, and how to engage in service that encompasses student advising, university-related service, and contributing to the local communities in which MSIs are situated.
