Join us on November 24th at 7pm (EST) for a webinar with Dr. Cheri Ostroff, hosted by the School of Human Resource Management at York University, Toronto, Canada.
Dr. Ostroff will speak about Leveraging Human Resource Management Systems to Enhance Effectiveness for roughly 50-60 minutes, with 30-40 minutes of moderated participant discussion to follow.
This webinar is part of The Monica Belcourt Speaker Series at the School of Human Resource Management at York University. The series is intended to bring together academics and practitioners to learn about and discuss current issues in HRM and future directions for the field.
Brief overview of the talk:
Effective HR systems can create collective behaviors and responses that enhance organisational effectiveness, but practices often do not reach their potential. A distinction has been drawn between the content of HR practices or what the specific practice is (e.g., training, performance incentives) and the process of HRM or how the practices are delivered so that employees can appropriately interpret, attach meaning to the practices, and behave in expected ways. HR practices will be ineffective in creating appropriate collective responses if the process of how they are delivered is weak. Thus, creating a strong HR system allows for collective sense-making and collective responses among employees in order to achieve "more than the sum of the parts" in organisations. These notions are then extended to organizational change. A missing piece is understanding how employees develop a collective perception of the new practices, policies, and procedures during major change initiatives. Tactics for linking HR practices to new collective interpretations during change are addressed.
