About the Department of Managerial Studies
The Department of Managerial Studies in the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) College of Business Administration offers undergraduate degrees in Management, Human Resource Management, and Entrepreneurship, delivers the College's integrated undergraduate capstone course, and contributes extensively to graduate education, including the MBA, online MBA, and the forthcoming online Master of Science in Human Resource Management (MSHRM).
The department is home to internationally recognized faculty whose research advances knowledge in organizational behavior, human resource management, leadership, entrepreneurship, strategic management, and related fields, with publications in leading academic journals. The department also supports a strong PhD program in Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management, preparing doctoral students for academic careers through rigorous research training and close faculty mentorship. The Institute for Leadership Excellence and Development (iLEAD) is led by faculty in the Department of Managerial Studies and advances leadership development, applied research, and external engagement.
Position Summary
The University of Illinois Chicago College of Business Administration invites applications for the position of Department Head and Tenured Professor in the Department of Managerial Studies. The Department Head serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the department and provides leadership in accordance with college and departmental bylaws and the University of Illinois Statutes.
The Department Head is responsible for setting and advancing a clear vision for the department's academic mission, promoting excellence in research, teaching, and service, and fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing academic environment. The successful candidate will be an accomplished scholar and effective leader who can guide the department through its next phase of growth and impact. The position includes a tenured faculty appointment at the rank of Professor.
Duties & Responsibilities
Academic and Strategic Leadership
- Provide strategic leadership for the department's undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs, ensuring academic quality, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Advance the department's research mission by supporting faculty scholarship, interdisciplinary collaboration, and external funding activities.
- Strengthen the department's role in online and professional graduate education.
Faculty Affairs
- Lead faculty recruitment, mentoring, evaluation, and development.
- Oversee promotion, tenure, and annual review processes in accordance with university and college policies.
- Foster a collegial, inclusive, and supportive departmental culture.
Administrative and Operational Leadership
- Oversee the fiscal and academic administration of the department, working collaboratively with undergraduate and graduate program directors.
- Manage instructional planning, course scheduling, and resource allocation.
- Supervise and support departmental staff.
Teaching, Service, and Engagement
- Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in areas such as management, organizational behavior, human resource management, or strategic management.
- Candidates with experience or interest in data analytics, AI-enabled decision making, or innovative pedagogical approaches are encouraged to highlight this expertise.
- Provide service to the department, college, and university.
- Contribute to the College's mission through industry engagement, student involvement, and professional service.
Minimum Qualifications
- Earned doctorate (PhD or equivalent) in management or a closely related field.
- Eligibility for appointment as a tenured Full Professor.
- Record of excellence in teaching and curriculum development.
- Sustained scholarly achievements with a national and international reputation.
- Applicants must demonstrate a strong and ongoing research agenda, with a track record of publications in top-ranked, peer-reviewed journals.
- Demonstrated administrative or leadership experience.
- Experience mentoring faculty, graduate students, and/or staff.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to articulate and implement a shared strategic vision.
- Record of leadership that advances academic quality, research impact, and student success.
- Experience engaging diverse stakeholders, including alumni, industry, and community partners.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
