Join us for an exciting webinar where we will present two innovative approaches to engage students, provide them with memorable experiences that add value, and are useful to teach international business.
Company-based Case Teaching: Globalization of Chinese Companies Course
Shameen Prashantham will discuss a pedagogical approach that CEIBS refers to as "real situation learning" whereby students are taught case studies on the premises of the case-company, along with a company tour and interactions with executives. He will discuss a three-day course taught in Nanjing, China primarily for international MBA students involving cases of Chinese companies that "springboarded" into advanced markets in Europe and North America via cross-border acquisitions. In addition to highlighting how case teaching can be brought alive for MBA students, this example also highlights potential synergy between research and teaching, as these cases resulted from a multi-year research project at CEIBS.
Gamified experiential learning: Walking Family Business Workshop
Marleen Dieleman will discuss an experiential learning innovation where participants engage in "out of the walls" learning in the form of a gamified amazing race through Singapore in small teams. The walking family business workshop leverages free technologies, combining mini-video lectures, proactive team research and insta-worthy memories while appealing to the competitive animal spirits of participants. Initially started as a course activity, the activity has been turned into a company with walking workshops for executives and professionals.
Brief bio:
Shameen Prashantham is a Professor of International Business and Strategy, and Associate Dean (MBA), at China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) in Shanghai, China. Prof. Prashantham is best known for his work at intersection of global strategy and entrepreneurship on partnering between large multinationals and startups – which he refers to as "dancing with gorillas." He is currently focused on studying how these partnerships contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). His latest book is Gorillas Can Dance: Lessons from Microsoft and Other Corporations on Partnering with Startups Wiley, 2022).
Marleen Dieleman holds the Peter Lorange Chair in Family Business at IMD. Her research focuses on the governance, strategy, internationalization, innovation, and transformation of emerging market enterprises, in particular family business groups.
She is an award-winning teacher, a frequently invited speaker and panelist at conferences, and has worked with numerous Asian family firms as a consultant and board member.
Marleen has published widely on the strategy and governance of Asian family business groups, including books, book chapters, teaching cases and articles in academic journals.
Previously, she was Associate Professor at NUS Business School in Singapore. Marleen holds a MSc degree from Rotterdam School of Management and a PhD from Leiden University, both in The Netherlands.
