    Symposium abstract

Given the growing interest in emotion in organizations, and in line with the Annual Meeting theme of "Innovating for the Future: Policy, Purpose, and Organizations," we are interested in what role(s) emotional regulation plays in work outcomes. For this symposium, we are seeking passionate scholars who want to share their expertise and insights on emotion. Specifically, we call for research, conceptual or empirical, on emotional regulation, defined as the process by which an individual form, interpret, modify, and display a specific feeling in one's social/work context (Grandey, 2000; Hochschild, 1983). Emotion functions as one of the key components in diverse occupations and social contexts, orienting an individual's attitudes and behaviors in workplaces and everyday life in specific directions (Spector & Fox, 2002). It affects the way organizational members manage and display their feelings according to social norms and/or expectations. In this regard, emotional regulation becomes important both to employees and their organization because how effectively one regulates one's emotions is interconnected with others. The main purpose of our symposium is to attract scholars to pay more attention on emotional regulation, encompassing its potential effects across work and non-work areas, and to delve into the challenges and consequences of this pervasive but understudied phenomenon.

We look forward to receiving your initial short abstract by November 27, 2023.
