  • 1.  Best Practices for Employee Recognition and Reward Practices?

    Posted 04-26-2021 09:30

    Dear Colleagues,

A potential corporate partner recently asked me about the best practices for implementing employee reward and recognition programs. Feeling insufficiently informed to answer his question, I told him I'd check with other colleagues to ensure that I gave him an informed answer/suggestion.

My primarily OB background only tells me that both over and under use of monetary incentives can be problematic. Apart from that very general understanding, I am unsure what we (the field) know about finding the right balance between the various ways managers can encourage outstanding contributions (instrumental incentives, praise, promotions, public recognition, etc.). Any specific insights or recommended reading you could offer, therefore, would be most welcome.

    Thank you in advance,

    Jason

    Jason,
I think you will find the following Business Horizons article useful (available at http://www.hermanaguinis.com/pubs.html):

    • Aguinis, H., Joo, H., & Gottfredson, R. K. 2013. What monetary rewards can and cannot do: How to show employees the money. Business Horizons, 56(2): 241-249.
    I hope this helps!
    All the best,
    --Herman.
